November, 2001 | Dr. Richard J. Sharpe, a Gloucester dermatologist accused of gunning down his estranged wife, was a long-time spouse abuser who threw acid in his wife's face, repeatedly stabbed her with a fork and tried to poison her, according to court documents.

The allegations, filed with three photographs of Sharpe dressed in women's clothing, were among court documents filed Monday by relatives opposing Sharpe's request that his two youngest children be evaluated to determine whether he can have visitation rights.

Sharpe has been charged with shooting the children's mother, Karen Sharpe, in the front hallway of her Wenham home in July while a baby sitter and the two children were in the house.

The young children, a 4-year girl and an 8-year-old boy, are in the custody of Sharpe's 27-year-old daughter, Shannon Sharpe, and Karen Sharpe's sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Victor Lembo.

A judge in Essex County Family and Probate court is set to hear Sharpe's motion Wednesday to have the two youngest children undergo an independent psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he can have contact with them.

Juliane Balliro, an attorney representing Sharpe in the divorce case, said that Sharpe is "very concerned with the mental well-being of his children." He has wanted to contact the children, Balliro said, "but he didn't want to do anything unless he felt confident that this would not be harmful to them."

The documents filed Monday were intended to persuade the court not to allow Sharpe to seek contact with his children. They included affidavits from Shannon Sharpe, and three photographs of Sharpe in various poses - including one in which he appears to be dancing - wearing slinky dresses, fishnet stockings and makeup.

In the affidavits, Shannon Sharp alleged that Richard Sharpe, who had a laser hair removal business called LaseHair, was a habitual cross-dresser who took female hormones and periodically stole underwear from his wife and daughter.

The Boston Herald reported that the affidavits also alleged psychological and physical abuse.

After Karen Sharpe said she wanted a divorce, Richard Sharpe "became enraged" and stabbed her in the head with a fork. Shortly after, Shannon Sharpe wrote, her father "concocted a poisonous solution" and put it in her Cool Whip. In 1983, Richard Sharpe also allegedly threw acid in his wife's face, Shannon Sharpe wrote.
